Jan Sluiters exhibition at Singer Museum Laren 2011 - 2012
Today I went to the Jan Sluijters (1881 – 1957) exhibition at Singer museum in Laren. The exhibition runs until 22nd of January 2012. It was very inspiring to see the work of Jan. I am not so much into cubism and fauvism myself but there was plenty of attractive figurative work.
The Netherlands Institute of Art History (Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie) has an online database of the work of Jan. It is nice with an online database but it is much nicer to see the work in real life, like in the Singer museum, especially since the image resolution in real life is infinitely higher.
One of Jan’s most famous works was a painting for a competition ‘Prix de Rome’ that he won. The price of the competition was a scholarship and a trip to Paris etc. When Jan came home from Paris the price organization was so disappointed by his work in Paris that they cancelled the scholarship. How dared they do such a thing?
Jan was often criticized for his images of naked women. I could see many of these paintings and I could not find anything wrong with them? They were great!
I moved from Sweden to The Netherlands in 1995.
Here on this site, you find my creations because that is what I do. I create.
