Fongerspad in Almere
This is a painting of the houses at Lake Weerwater in Almere. I don’t live in any of these flats but I come here two times per day when biking to and from work. The name in Dutch of this lake means “water again”. The reason for this name comes from that initially this place was Lake IJssel and then during the 1960s it got poldered and then this was land. To build the city massive amounts of sand had to be used to equalize the lake floor etc and that sand was taken from what was going to become this lake. Then there were water here again and hence the name “Water again”.During 2010 I was almost obsessed about painting. This day in the summer was cloudy and actually not an ideal day to go out and paint outside but I had decided that whatever the result would be I had to be able to learn something from the exercise.
